The Sound Alliance

The Sound Alliance (The Alliance) is an emerging countywide organization of diverse religious institutions, parent-teacher organizations, unions and other interested groups. It is driven by the belief that these Mediating Institutions must be strong because they are the cornerstone of a vibrant democratic society and hold the key to mending and reweaving the social fabric essential for strong families, healthy communities and a just world. The Alliance, therefore, has two primary goals:

1) To help strengthen each member organization. This involves fostering organizational cultures that are Relational, Action-Oriented and Reflective / Learning.

2) To serve as a vehicle for member groups to act in the public arena with sufficient power for justice and the common good. This requires a broad-based organization of 40-60 members representing the cultural, religious, racial, economic and geographic diversity of the county.

The Sound Alliance is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization directed by a team of leaders from participating institutions and served by a professional organizing staff. It is affiliated with the Industrial Area Foundation (IAF), the oldest and largest network of broad based organizations in the country.

Leadership Institutes

The work of building stronger Mediation Institutions (churches, synagogues, parent-teacher organizations, unions, etc.) cannot be done by a few institutional leaders or staff alone. The Leadership Institutes help each organization develop a large Core team that is trained and committed to strengthening its institution and engaging its members in public action. The Institutes provide 12 hours of content based on the philosophy and practices developed by the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) in over 50 years of organizing experience. The topics include:

  • Why organize? – examining the history and traditions of our religious, union and parent-teacher organizations.

  • The fundamental organizing skills – individual relational meetings, Listening / Solidarity Seasons, research, negotiations, and action.

  • Strengthening our institutions – systematically engaging people in a culture that is relational, action-oriented and reflective / learning.

  • Problems versus issues – moving from general problems to concrete, winnable issues.

  • Using relational power in the public arena to negotiate for the common good.
