How to apply for an 01-General Journeyman Electrician License:

If you have a current Electrical License from one of the following states:

Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Massachusetts Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming;

And have carried it for more than one year, follow the instructions for:

(If you have had a license from one of these states for less than one year, the license can be used to prove hours and the applicant will have to take the exam.)

To File for an Reciprocal Electrician Certificate

Go to www.lni.wa.gov

Click on the “Trades & Licensing” tab

Go to Licenses & Permits

Click on “Licensing & Registration”

Scroll down to Electrical

Click on “Electrician”

Click on “Apply For an Electrician Certificate”

Scroll down to #5

Click on “Pay and Apply Online via L&I’s Get Or Renew A License System (Quick Cards)”

Read and accept the legal notice.

   2. Your Specialty is 01-General

   3. Choose - Reciprocal

Follow the rest of the steps in the application process. 

Pay the fee. 

Print out and save the receipt.


To Apply for an Electrician Examination

Go to www.lni.wa.gov

Click on the “Trades & Licensing” tab

Go to Licenses & Permits

Click on “Licensing & Registration”

Scroll down to Electrical

Click on “Electrician”

Click on “Apply For an Electrician Certificate”

Click on “Pay and Apply Online via L&I’s Get Or Renew A License System (Quick Cards)”

Read and accept the legal notice.

   2. Your Specialty is 01-General

   3. Choose – Test

Follow the rest of the steps in the application process.  Pay the fee.  Print out the receipt and mail it with other information required to take the exam.

Call Washington State Labor and Industries at 360-902-5269

Ask specifically what needs to be included to give them enough information so you can take the 01-Electrical Exam.  If you do not send enough information, it will slow down the application process and you will have to resubmit.

Ask if they will accept a travel letter.  It will probably have to be an original copy, be notarized, and include the number of hours you have worked in your state.

Other items that they may ask for:

   

Copy of contractors’ state license

   Notarized letter from the owner of the company, the exact dates of employment, and the type of work done (commercial).

   Payroll documentation (pay stubs, W2's, etc.) supporting the time frame that is shown in the letter.

Allow at least four (4) weeks processing.

To find a testing facility near you

After L & I approves you to take their exam, you can take it at the nearest LaserGrade testing center.

Click on the “Scheduling” tab

Click on “LaserGrade” or “LaserGrade.com”

Click on “Locate a Testing Center”

Enter your zip code and click on “Find Testing Center”

It will cost $70 to take the 01-General Journeyman Electrician exam at LaserGrade.

The test is the “Washington State Department of Labor and Industries”

“01-General Journeyman Electrician”

To register for an exam, call (800)211-2754 to tell them where and when you want to test.


To obtain information on what is on the test

Click on “General Journeyman Electrician”

This gets you to a chart which shows that there are 60 questions on one test and what part of the code book they come from. You have three hours to complete this test.

The second test contains 17 questions on the WAC and the RCW.  You have an hour to complete this test.  The WAC and RCW are laws specific to Washington State.  You will need to download copies to study and take the exam.

A score of 70% is required on both tests to receive an 01 Electrical License.

   RCW19.28

   WAC 296-46B

   Calculator

   Any other copyrighted books that you want to bring.

Scroll down to Electrical

Click on “Electrician”

Click on revised code of Washington (RCW) 19.28.

Click on “Complete Chapter”

Print the information.


To download the WAC 296-46B

Go to www.lni.wa.gov

Click on the “Trades & Licensing” tab

Go to “Licenses & Permits”

Click on “Licensing & Registration”

Scroll down to Electrical

Click on “Electrician”

Click on “Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 296-46b”.

Print the information.


To continue working if you fail the 01-Electrical Exam

If you are working in this state on a 20-Day Temporary Work Permit and you fail the Electrical exam, you can get a 90-Day Temporary Work Permit from the Department of Labor and Industries.  The permit will cost you $23.40 and you will need to provide proof that you are enrolled in a Journeyman Electrician Refresher Course. Contact the JATC regarding signing up for the Refresher course. Also, our JATC has Continuing Education Courses for both the NEC and WAC.

Travel Letters

If you are coming to Washington State, right away our Washington State Department of Labor & Industries offices are accepting Travel Letters as proof of hours. To be accepted as proof of hours, a traveler needs to have a statement that he/she has at least 8,000 hours of which 4,000 needs to be Commercial or Industrial hours.

Other items the the Department of Labor & Industries would like to see on a Travel Letter:  

  • You have graduated from an electrical JATC. (If you have separate proof, that is even better).
  •    
  • You have passed your State Journeyman Electrician Exam. (Recommended, but not required.)
  •    
  • You passed the IBEW Journeymen Electriican Exam. (Recommended, but not required.)
